THE CLABA ARCHIVE
Inside the game.
Its history, its ideas and the reasons to come back.
There is a formation of enemies above your ship, and the next wave can change the rules. Round 42 offers forty-two rounds of space combat, with different types of adversaries and stretches that require dodging along a course. Mike Pooler is the author of the program, and the title screen shows the name Elven Software Company and the 1986 copyright.
The DOS edition uses a very low-resolution display. The enemies are drawn with a few color blocks, enough to tell their shapes apart and follow their movements. The RetroBat copy keeps the file ROUND42.COM, with the original menu and instructions in English.
Two attacks with different uses
The arrow keys control the ship's movement. F1 fires the standard projectiles and F2 activates the phasor, a weapon with limited charges. Its reserve appears next to the score in the form of rays. Spending it on the first enemy leaves less margin when a formation becomes hard to get through.
Every four rounds a warp stretch arrives: there, moving left and right to follow the available path is what matters. The built-in manual also explains recovery after taking a hit and grants an extra ship upon reaching each multiple of 7,500 points. The phasor charges are replenished at the start of a round and upon reaching that same figure.
Instructions inside the executable
After the initial notice, the menu lets you begin with Enter, consult the instructions with I, or open a note for programmers with P. That note describes the use of Turbo Pascal and the Lores Toolbox graphics library. The main functions are documented within the game, without depending on a manual from another edition.

THE SECRET SIDE OF THE GAME
Tips, tricks and secrets.
A hint at the right time. A code that changes everything.
Tip: save the phasor for a hard passage
The F2 attack has limited charges. Before spending it, see whether you can solve the formation with the normal shot or by moving into a gap.
Tip: study the next formation
The enemy types change between rounds. Use the first moments to recognize their paths and the space they leave, instead of always staying in the same position.
Tip: prepare for the warp rounds
Every fourth round the challenge shifts to a path. Pay attention to the horizontal passage and leave room to correct to both sides.

Getting from the initial notice into the game
Press a key to close the shareware notice. On the main menu, Enter starts Round 42; I opens the instructions and P the programmer's note. Read the help before rushing in firing: F1 and F2 have different functions.
Moving and choosing your attack
Use the arrow keys to move the ship; you can also combine directions. F1 fires and F2 spends a phasor charge. The number of charges is shown next to the score. The original instructions describe the directions on the numeric keypad.
Pause and game sound
Space pauses the game. F9 and F10 change the sound according to the original help; Esc leaves the game or returns to DOS. The player's bar offers its own pause, mute and exit, independent of those keys.
Keeping the copy and consulting its help
The download contains ROUND42.COM. Run it in DOSBox with a compatible graphics card. The I and P screens in the menu are the original sources for its controls, scoring and technical details; they have not been mixed with instructions from a similarly named game.
